TV Favorites

I try to make time for relaxation. It’s important to not get yourself so over-burdened with all of the things to “need” to do and enjoy some of the simpler pleasures in life.

I don’t read fiction. I’m not a slow reader, but I’m also not a super fast reader. So, depending on certain factors, it could take me a few days to finish a good work of fiction. If I’m going to spend that much time reading, I might as well make it something non-fiction. Something with either cutting opinion, or something that I can learn.

I substitute this for television. Either movies or shows. Some say this is inferior: your imagination is a powerful thing. Well, I just my imagination all the time, I don’t really need to follow a book to use it. In fact, I’m a very imaginative person (and it sometimes gets me into trouble!).

I say, for the person like me who wants to minimize their wasting of time and maximize their enjoyment of things that “don’t matter,” good television shows or movies are an excellent substitute.

Currently, in no particular order, are my favorite shows:

  • Dexter (Showtime)
  • Californication (Showtime)
  • Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox)
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX)
  • House (Fox)
  • Fringe (Fox)
  • 24 (Fox)
  • Lost (ABC)

24 is coming back in January, so I will have to wait to see how it goes. But right now, the more serial the show, the more I enjoy it. Dexter, Terminator, and Californication fit that mold right now. Terminator and Dexter especially, as I really look forward to the next episode.

If Fox cancels Terminator, I will be really angry, because the writing for it is definitely above par. If you ignore any canon issues with the movies (which I can do easily) then it is a really good show. The universe it creates is a good mixture of optimism and futility — along with a good bit of suspicion and questioning of motives. And, for those of you who hate time travel paradoxes in stories, they throw in “you must have come from a future where that didn’t happen.” Which is great.

That’s all I have to say right now.
